The Mindset Change

When trying to start a new minimalist life and mindset, why wouldn’t you start with The Minimalists? Of course, most people who are somewhat involved in a minimalist lifestyle have probably come across these guys at least once. If you don’t know about them, go read a few things on their page, I think you’ll be interested in their work.

It isn’t difficult to stumble across Josh and Ryan’s work when you are searching for inspirational or motivational things to help you minimize or learn about minimalism. I first came across their definition of minimalism as well as a few other essays they have posted on their website. Now, when I say that I become completely and totally engrossed in their work it might be an understatement. As soon as I saw they had podcasts, I was scrolling through the details and downloading the most relevant ones to my life. I listened to the first podcast and came away with so many ideas that I decided to dedicate a notebook to taking notes on their episodes. I’ve listened to about 15 of their podcasts and scrolled through almost all of their essays online.

In the last week or two since I have been listening to them, I have been consciously trying to implement some of their advice into my everyday life. I even had the opportunity to turn some surface level interactions into really meaningful conversations using tips like talking about what you are passionate about versus what you actually do. I’ve noticed a change in my mindset and what I focus on and actively try to change the way I think.

Over the next few posts I hope to convey some of their lessons that I have taken to heart and share how they have changed my life, for better or worse, and how it has helped me start the purge of my excess and clutter. As it gets closer and closer to my wardrobe annihilation and the extermination of the monsters under my bed and in my closet, I hope that some of these lessons will help me put my excess in a new perspective so I can clean and eliminate without attachment. I even purchased their book to help myself as well, you can too.
