When I made a deal with myself in late July to write more, I did just that. Since the start of August, I have pulled all of my notebooks out from the woodwork and have started writing everything. One notebook is for journaling. One is for tips on book writing. One is specific for the book I want to craft. And I have a special notebook waiting for national novel writing month (NaNoWriMo).
Now, I haven’t quite committed to that crazy idea yet but I also haven’t said no. I think it is something that would be completely and totally amazing, eye-opening, fantastic, terrible, idiotic, magical, and crazy. I like to set myself up for challenges and this would be the biggest, most unfamiliar challenge I think I will have faced in my adult life. I’d be jumping into uncharted waters, exploring a world in which I have no practice and little experience.
It is a challenge that I wholeheartedly want to throw myself at with no hesitation.
For those unfamiliar with the concept, NaNoWriMo is a challenge where you write an entire novel in a single month, November. It boils down to 50,000 words over 30 days. 1,667 words a day. You start with a blank page and you end with a manuscript, a first draft. You face highs and lows, creativity and writing blocks, encouragement and discouragement. You build a story, love the story, hate the story, change the story, and destroy your social life in the process. You can end the month with a story full of utterly useless garbage but you can say you wrote a novel. You can also end the month with a first draft of your favorite new brain-child, something that you want to protect and later develop into a fully-functioning book.
While my goal would be the latter, I would be happy with either result. Because for once I will have put something together. I will have accomplished a writing feat only a crazy person would pursue. I would come out on the other side as a person who wrote a novel. No one has to ever see it or read it and I would still be that person. I would have put 50K words together to create a piece of junk or a complete masterpiece or something in between. But I guess we will just have to wait until November to see.
What are your thoughts on this all? Bets that I’ll fail? Succeed? Go crazy and drop off the map never to be heard from again? This should be fun.
