Fall autumn road

August Update

I know I’m a little late to the party but it has been a busy schedule. By busy I mean I purposely filled all of my time with something valuable. It may have been the most stressful month but I got so much out of August.

What I’ve Been Reading

First thing’s first, I came across a NaNoWriMo idea and that led to just a black hole of investigation – reading and writing and learning all about what goes into the challenge. Of course, I found No Plot? No Problem! and decided this was the greatest (and by greatest I mean dumbest) idea I could possibly do.

Following my trial run, I read This Is Not a Writing Manual and then Troubleshooting Your Novel from the library, the second of which I loved so dang much I went ahead and bought it so I could make all of my notes on the pages. I have a few more books on hold from the library to read when available but I really tested my creative juices by reading Writing Poetry from the Inside Out by Sanford Lyne. It was really fun to explore some other ideas and outlets!

What I’ve Been Listening To

Mating Ritual (basically everything, I’m in love), DREAMERS (new EP), and ROMES (new songs and found some of their older stuff). Obvs, lovelytheband’s album was absolutely spectacular.  If you want, ask me about their songs!

I just love music so much that I decided to incorporate it into my new novel.

What I’ve Been Writing

I wrote a book in ten days. I loved it. I cried. I edited and adjusted but it just didn’t feel right. I had developed a new writing style throughout the first draft and you could tell how much the story changed because of it. The ending style was so much better than the beginning.

So I decided to do it again. I did a massive rewrite. I kept the premise but changed the beginning. Then I changed the middle. And then I surprised myself and went in a completely different direction for my ending! It really is true what they say– your characters drive the story, you just report it from the passenger seat.

Well, as of last night, I finished the rewrite. So now I’m going to be digging into my Troubleshooting book and getting after the editing. SO MUCH FUN.

I’ve honestly spent most of my time between work, school, and writing so there hasn’t been much room for watching or thinking. Maybe that’s a good thing. Hope your month went well. Suggest some music and books for me! I’m trying to fill every second of my life before I dive into NaNoWriMo in a couple months.
